A Different Type of Independence Day

|

As July 4th approaches, and we continue to adjust to the “new normal,” you may be considering your own independence – separation or divorce.

While we can expect plenty of fireworks this holiday weekend, if the fireworks in your marriage have shifted from the romantic and bright kind to the loud and explosive kind, it may be time to consider your options.

Holiday weekends can bring up emotions and memories of old traditions and better times. If you do expect to divorce your spouse soon, but you are still living under one roof, here are some quick tips to survive the holiday weekend.

The best thing you can do is stay busy. While we have spent months indoors and quarantined, safely use this holiday as a way to break that pattern. Maybe your children were scheduled to be at camp this summer but are now home with you due to the pandemic. Spend time outside, social distance at the beach, and focus on enjoying the quality time with your children. As beaches, restaurants and public places re-open, there are plenty of welcome distractions that you have not had the benefit of for the past several months. Maybe see your friends for a socially distant night out and if you and your spouse cannot co-exist together during this holiday, schedule designated periods during the weekend to separately spend time with your children.

While your idea of a great July 4th may be tempered this year by both the pandemic and the breakdown of your marriage, now is the time to find your “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness” and hopefully by next July 4th, you will be celebrating a different type of independence.
